Why This Matters
Reading is one of the most important skills a child will ever learn.
But teachers rarely have the time to sit one-on-one with every student as often as they’d like. Some students quietly fall behind. Others read accurately but don’t understand what they’ve read.
This project asks a simple question:
Can technology help teachers notice more, faster — while keeping human judgment at the centre?
What We’re Building
- A lightweight, teacher-friendly tool that listens as students read aloud
- It highlights pauses, substitutions, skipped words and other reading cues
- It can gently ask the student to retell or explain what they read
- Teachers get insight — not a score — to guide next steps
Why Open Source and Canadian-Hosted?
- Schools and ministries need tools they can trust, adapt, and host within Canada to meet FIPPA privacy requirements
- Open-source means this becomes a public good, not a commercial product
- Institutions can choose cloud hosting or local, school-controlled processing
This is not about replacing teachers.
It’s about giving them time back — and giving every student a chance to be seen.
